Philippa Dunn, born in London, graduated from the University of Massachusetts earning a degree in Art History and French. Philippa has worked in multiple Art Museums, including in Tennessee and Massachusetts, and like other artists before her, is influenced by the work we see in the Museums and galleries today. She resides on the North shore with her family and maintains a studio there.
“Most often, I begin a painting in the spur of a moment. A desire to capture color and shapes begins a need to paint. The bright warmth of the sun, and the cool contrast of the shadows finds its way onto a canvas. This contrast is like a visual jolt, and I begin to find a way to communicate through color. When time permits, I paint en plein air, and finish up in the studio. Otherwise, I work from photographs, emphasizing color and removing any details that distract the viewer from the subject and space. Often, the subject matter is serene, a quiet setting, stripped of detail and action, but embedded with a kind of dynamism, with the brushstrokes alone creating a sense of movement."
